An ostomy pouch is a bag for collection of stool or urine. The ostomy pouch is attached to the abdomen, over the stoma. People who wear ostomy pouches generally have colostomy, ileostomy or urostomy.

The ostomy pouch is usually part of a one-piece or two-piece pouching systems.

A two-piece pouching systems consists of two parts - a flange (also called a wafer, mounting plate or baseplate) and a pouch that is being attached to the flange.

In a one-piece pouching system the pouch and the flange are permanently attached and cannot be separated.

Both systems have their advantages and disadvantages and you should consult your ostomy nurse (ET nurse) before deciding which one to use.
